The Urbane Ecologist

Dissertation Work

As part of my MSc in Environment and Sustainable Development, I’m expected to submit a dissertation. I’m interested in the paradoxes embodied in renewable energy projects in sub-Saharan Africa (here is the post when I first announced I would be doing it on my blog, and why). I’ll be sharing my progress occasionally and my notes from my readings as I go along.

Here is a map I’ve been working on of large-scale solar energy projects executed or planned in Africa (focus on sub-Saharan) (ArcGIS Online Platform). It’s just for fun, so it’s pretty messy, and it’s definitely not complete. It’s also zoomed into South Africa because that is what I was looking at when I got the link but you can zoom out.

The Energy Blog (energy.org.za) also has a really nice map of Renewable Energy Project Sites in South Africa (OpenStreetMap platform).
